Description
You are bidding on a set of 45 pneumatics from a pipe organ. These were most likely used for a tuned percussion such as chimes, celeste, chrysoglott, glockenspiel, or xylophone. Each pneumatic measures 7" x 1-3/8" and has a 7/8" hole centered at 4-15/16" up from the bottom/hinged edge on the back. The hardwood blanks are non-tapered, 3/8" thick and hinged at one end. When inflated, the pneumatics extend from approx. 7/8" to 2".
Each pneumatic has four small screw holes in the front, presumably used to mount a mallet or striker arm. There is also a ghost of a bumper felt impression on the front, further confirming that these are from a tuned percussion.
Each pneumatic was previously attached with a heavy blotter paper gasket that was sacrificed in order to remove them (as is standard practice).
19 of the pneumatics have been recovered in a fine black rubber cloth material in very good shape. 26 are covered in an original brown leather which should probably be replaced. I am not sure if someone started to recover these and stopped at 19, or if these are from two different actions. The measurements and screw/mounting holes are identical across all 45.
I hope someone can use these!
